The full story behind Farmyard Flowers...

Hey there! My name is Laura and I am a long-time resident of a little town by the name of Broad Valley in Manitoba’s glorious Interlake region :).

I grew up on a forage seed and leafcutter bee farm right here in Broad Valley. Years working with my father on the farm, and watching my mum plant and maintain multiple gardens and flower beds every summer, sparked a passion in me for growing things. Plants, insects and the physical sciences in general simply fascinated me. After high school, I attended the University of Manitoba and obtained my Bachelor of Sciences (Agroecology) with a minor in entomology. Shortly thereafter, I married my high school sweet heart Colin, and settled down just a stones throw from my childhood home.

Fast forward to present day: Colin and I own and operate our very own forage seed and leafcutter bee farm; we have three young children; and, I also work full time off the farm in the agriculture sector. Life is beyond busy, to say the least, but I am so grateful to be able to pursue things that I am truly passionate about.

Speaking of passions…I had been tossing around the idea of selling cut flowers for a *long* time, but it was an idle fantasy in the back of my mind. I’ve always kept a garden and tons of flowers, but I had too many other pressing priorities (like two full time jobs and three kids!!). In 2020, after years of thinking about it, and thanks to the encouragement and support of some very amazing friends, I finally started selling some of my creations. Maybe I was just stir-crazy after COVID hit, but I threw caution to the wind in a “It’s now or never!!” fit of recklessness, and here I am!

I started small in summer 2020, testing the waters to learn what folks in the area want and how they prefer to buy their flowers. I learned a ton last year, and will continue to grow and experiment this year. I am always open to suggestions and can’t wait to see how this new adventure continues to grow!
